Remodeling
If you are remodeling or building a new home, many decisions will be made along the way. Perhaps the first and most important one will be choosing the right construction contractor to complete your home. Here are some questions to ask the construction professional to ensure they are the best fit for your project.
Are You licensed and insured?
Being licensed and insured is a good sign that the contractor is invested in their business. Be sure to ask to see certificate of insurance before signing a contract. It is important that the builder has adequate insurance, not just the minimum required by law.
What is the timeline for my project?
Remodeling or building a new home is disruptive. While delays can be expected due to unforeseen circumstances and change orders your contractor should be able to give you a rough timeline for completion.
Does your company offer any warranty?
When choosing a company, always make sure they offer a warranty of a minimum of 1 year for the work that is being completed. This helps to ensure quality craftsmanship and assurance that if something goes wrong the contractor will be obligated to return. Be sure to read the fine print to make sure you understand what is and is not covered by the warranty.
How do you communicate with clients during the project?
Home renovations and new builds can be a long process and ups and downs are to be expected. It is important that the contractor can effectively communicate with the client throughout. When surveying our clients, communication is one of the most important factors they consider when choosing a contractor. Here at Boardwalk Builders, we use a web-based portal to communicate with our clients.
Will my project have the same Project Manager for the extent of the project, or should I expect the project manager to change during the project?
Often contractors are working on several projects at one time, but there should be consistent supervision for your project. When the team changes information can be lost in translation. At Boardwalk, each project is assigned to a trusted Project Manager who supervises the project through completion.
What are the typical payment terms for my project?
It is important to understand when you will need to pay the contractor. This allows the client to plan for frequency of payments and how quickly it will be due to avoid interest charges.
Do you have references for yourself and the company?
Do not hesitate to ask for references. Call client references or ask acquaintances or family if they have any experience working with the company. Always ask if the contractor has built projects like yours, if so- ask for the address and drive by. It is very important to confirm that the contractor has the knowledge, skills, and experience to complete the work requested.
