This home, built in 1960, was in need of substantial upgrades to plumbing, electrical and heating systems. Previous remodels had left the house disjointed, and had created a muddled traffic flow. Fortunately, the home included a beautiful 3 acre lot with mature landscaping and a large private backyard. The owners needed additional bedroom space for their large family, and wanted public spaces suited to entertaining in an atmosphere of dynamic sophistication.

Working with award-winning architect Mark Mclnturff, the core of the new design combines 2 previous rooms into one large great room, with an exposed truss emphasizing the structural division.

The rich color palette enlivens this striking space and is in contrast to the neutral palette used elsewhere. The adjacent kitchen handles a crowd well, with its large island creating a focus for conversations and/or food preparation, as the situation warrants. Large amounts of storage are provided by pantry cabinets built into the long interior wall. The cabinets were custom made by Oceanic Ventures, and their full overlay, shaker panel doors maintain the crisp lines of the architecture.

The two types of cedar siding on the exterior emphasize the horizontal lines of the home, harmonizing it with the expansive site. A central cupola provides vertical emphasis and directs light into the great room. The twin gables of the rear elevation serve to unify the new and old parts of the house, while extending the house into the generous back yard.
