Winter Storm Jonas: The Clean-Up

on Wednesday, 27 January 2016.

While Delaware escaped winter storm Jonas with minimal snowfall, our coastal areas suffered damage from historically high water levels. Due to the combination of full moon, high winds, and precipitation, many homeowners were impacted by floodwaters.

  1. Turn Off the Power. If you can not turn off the power from safely outside the flooded area, call an electrician. Never enter water to turn off the power.
  2. Remove the Water. Once the electrician deems it safe to do so, start by removing the water from the flooded area using pumps or vacuums.
  3. Dispose of Contaminated Materials. After the water is safely removed, take steps to remove any contaminated materials. Any material that could harbor mold should be thrown away.
  4. Dry Everything Out. Next it is time to start the dry out process. Fans and dehumidifiers should be used to help dry out the water damage.
  5. Make Repairs. When everything is dry, it is time to make plans for repairs. Contact your favorite contractor to get started brining your home back to greatness.
