How to Protect your Beach Home during Hurricane Season

Tuesday, 19 September 2017.

A few tips to help keep your beach home safe

Here are a few tips to help keep your home safe during Hurricane Season:

  • Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall-- trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe.

  • Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts and clear any clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.

  • Reduce property damage by retrofitting to secure and reinforce the roof, windows and doors, including the garage doors.

  • Either board up windows or protect them with storm shutters.

  • Bring outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and other moveable objects into the house or tie them down very securely.

  • Purchase a portable generator or install a generator for use during power outages. Remember to keep generators and other alternate power/heat sources outside, at least 20 feet away from windows and doors and protected from moisture; and NEVER try to power the house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet.

  • Take photos of your house inside and out to assist in settling insurance claims and to prove uninsured losses for tax deductions.
  • If your area floods frequently, always have a good stock of sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and lumber to protect your property.

A Porch to Sunroom Conversion

We think we’re second to none in design, but there’s one person who has us beat when it comes to creating beautiful surroundings… and that’s Mother Nature! So it was no surprise when our clients, John and Leslie, came to us wanting to convert their porch into a sunroom so they could enjoy all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer, year round.

Third Time's a Charm

A "Bathroom from Hell" gets transformed into a Heavenly Oasis

Third Time's a Charm

We call this project “Third Time’s a Charm” because this was Robert and Julie’s (our client) third attempt remodeling their master bathroom. Gasp! I know, we couldn’t believe it either! The first time they hired a contractor to renovate their bathroom, and ended up with shower leaks. They then had someone fix/redo the shower, and to their dismay, it leaked again. The extent of the water damage was so bad that they had to complete gut the bathroom. Finally, after two failed attempts at getting a beautiful, structurally sound master bath, Robert and Julie called US!

A Sea Inspired Remodel

A Sea Inspired Remodel

When Paul & Joanna approached us with the desire to do a full-scale remodel of their oceanfront penthouse, we couldn't have been more excited. Although the 1970's condo had breathtaking views of Bethany beach, the dated interior was far from impressive. We had one goal in mind with this remodel, and that was to make the interior as beautiful as the view outdoors. Here’s a look at what we did:

An Unused Porch gets Converted into a Serene Sitting Room

A Serene Sitting Room Addition

Living in a coastal town, the desire for more outdoor living space is often a common request from our clients when it comes to remodeling. But for these homeowners, their vision was quite the opposite. Instead of creating more outdoor space, they wanted to convert a porch into a sitting room for their master bedroom. Here's a look at the transformation:

Small tweaks created big changes in this beach home attic

Many of our remodeling projects focus on creating a more usable space for growing families, and today's featured blog is no exception. Generally, when we think about hosting and entertaining, we tend to focus on the kitchen and living spaces. However, equally important are the bedrooms for all of your guests. Today we will run through a unique attic remodel that turned this storage space into the perfect bunk room for the grandkids!

The Marsh House

Friday, 10 June 2016.

Modern custom home overlooking the Rehoboth Bay

When Patty first laid eyes on the corner lot adjacent to the Rehoboth Bay that would become the site for her dream home, she never imagined the possibilities. Partnering with Mark McInturff of McInturff associates, a long-time friend and collaborator, Patty and Mark got to work designing the home of her dreams. The goal for Patty and Mark was to design a house that capitalized on the views of the bay, included outdoor living space, and captured the coastal breezes.

Driveway Upgrades for More Curb Appeal

Friday, 20 May 2016.

Neighbors work together to increase their curb appeal!

While curb appeal is important when marketing a house, it is also an important detail to consider in homes that aren’t for sale. The driveway and entry to a home is usually the first detail of the home people are introduced to, whether the home owner, or guests. A well designed driveway frames the entry to the home and invites guests to focus on the home rather than the driveway. This before and after illustrates a driveway project that goes from drab to fab! Clients approached us about transforming their overgrown and dilapidated driveway. The driveway in question ran along the property boundary with their neighbors, and the neighbors actually teamed up to design a driveway space that would function for both properties.

Open Table Dinners

Friday, 29 April 2016.

A chance to gather with new and old acquaintances at one of our local area restaurants!

Open Table Dinners

When we address our family of clients, we really mean family. We recognize that Boardwalk Builders' successes are due in large part to our wonderful homeowners who share many of our values. In an effort to keep in touch with our growing client base we try to organize monthly open table "Dutch Treat" dinners. The idea is that a fluid group of friends and acquaintances gathers to socialize once a month. Some folks make it every month, and some less frequently. Typically the group ranges from an intimate 8 to a more rambunctious 18. We try to schedule the dinners every 6 weeks, and taking a break over the busy summer season.

Tree Top Kitchen Addition & Remodel

Thursday, 21 April 2016.

A second floor kitchen remodel created a beautiful space for entertaining friends and family.

These homeowners approached us with the desire to create a space that would be better suited to entertaining their family and friends. The existing kitchen was dark and cramped and the homeowners wanted a larger, brighter space in their home. By adding an addition we were able to move the kitchen to a new location in the home and transform the original kitchen to a sitting area. The result is a bright, spacious kitchen and sitting area where large groups can comfortably gather.

Exterior Facelift

Tuesday, 22 March 2016.

A new entry and expanded decking created wonderful outdoor living areas for the homeowners to enjoy.

At this bay front home the prime views of the Rehoboth Bay had become underappreciated due to the lack of enjoyable outdoor space, so the homeowners decided to make an outdoor living upgrade. Turning to Boardwalk Builders for help expanding their deck overlooking and improving their curb appeal we were able to revamp their outdoor space without impeding on the views of the bay.

Taking Care of Our Customers: How We Do It

Friday, 04 March 2016.

See how Boardwalk can help you orchestrate the nuances involved with renovating, repairing, or remodeling your coastal home.

Taking Care of Our Customers: How We Do It

At Boardwalk Builders we strive to put our customers first because we believe that our relationship with our clients is pivotal to our success. Customer service has always been one of our top priorities, and after years of practice, we seem to be on the right path. This effort has helped us to earn a 100% referral rating on Guild Quality. But we will never stop trying to improve your experience with our team.

To us, excellent customer service starts with the first call. While our goal is to set up an appointment to take a look at the problem or project at your home, there are times when the issue is outside our area of expertise. In those situations we do our best to refer you to someone who can help. At the first appointment we try to reach an understanding of your goals. Understanding what is important to you helps us define what the priorities for the project should be. Once the groundwork is laid, we are ready to be by your side for the duration of the project.

A Bathroom Sanctuary

Tuesday, 16 February 2016.

The before and after of a complete master bathroom remodel by Boardwalk Builders.

Creating a Sanctuary

As the before photos show, this master bath was poorly designed and lacked energy and feeling. Instead of offering respite from daily stress, the bath added to the daily struggle with constant clutter. Frustrated with their dated and cramped master bath, the homeowners came to Boardwalk Builder for help creating a more enjoyable sanctuary. Although the bathroom itself was large (11 ft x 9 ft) a seldom-used tub blocked access to the window and made the room feel crowded. Additionally, a linen closet squeezed the vanity and the shower was tiny and dark. To open up the space and make it more welcoming, new floors, cabinets, countertops, paint and shower were added to create a luxury feel in this master bath.
